1.6. Operating System

An operating system is a computer program, consisting of a big bunch of files. Other programs need it to run, and a computer can't run without an operating system.

Common operating systems are

Microsoft Windows
MacOS from Apple
Android for smartphones
iOS for Apple's smartphones
Linux

If no other app is running, it basically waits for you to do something, like start a web browser, a game, or whatever you're about to do.
